Farm Updates

This is our last official week of summer, with the Fall equinox arriving on Monday, September 22. The equinox is that brief moment of balance when day and night are equal before we tip into the darker half of the year.

Out in the fields you will see that same shift playing out. As the summer crops are slowing, but peppers and late season tomatoes are still shining, keeping a taste of summer in the mix as we move toward the season of stir fries, soups, and roasts.

We are now in week 18 of our CSA season. After this week we will have 8 weeks remaining as we make our way toward week 26. It feels good to take note of the distance we have come and to look ahead to all that is still to come in the fall shares. Be sure you take note of your share’s left and make a plan now and not in the last few weeks, as you can only use 2 share credits per week!

This week’s share highlights two different radishes, that stand out for both their larger size and their beauty. Watermelon radish, pale green on the outside with a bright pink center and a peppery bite, and purple daikon, long and striking with a milder, gentler flavor. Both bring color and crunch to your fall cooking, whether roasted, pickled, or sliced thin for a splash of brightness in salads.

We also raced to finish the last couple of fields to prepare them before the rain arrived today, so we could seed our cover crops. The timing could not be better, since the moisture we receive this week will help those freshly worked beds get off to a strong start. It is always a mix of relief and satisfaction to see the ground ready and the rain following right behind. Another storm later this week would also be welcomed!

So much investment has already been made in this season, and it continues to pay off each week as the harvest comes in. The more we can push right now to invest in cover crops and fall plantings, the more incredible the payoff will be down the line. This work points us toward the future, reminding us that caring for the earth and for each other is what truly matters.
