Farm Updates
This week’s weather has been delightful so far.
As always in the summer there is much happening, we’ve kicked off transplanting our fall crops and are preparing to seed the next wave into the field. It would be nice to catch one of those stray rain showers afterward, but it looks like we’re heading into a break from the steady rain we’ve seen most of the season.
The consistent wet weather has certainly made an impact. Some plants are showing signs their signs of stress, and we’re seeing more split tomatoes than in drier years. Still, overall yields remain strong and the crops continue to perform well despite that ongoing heat and humidity.
We’ve decided though to give the eggplant a short break after an incredible first round of production. Around this point in the season it typically needs time to put energy back into its leaves and flowers. It should be back in production soon and carry us close to the first frost.
This week we’re also transitioning into our third set of tomato plants and our third wave of squash fields. One of the ways we keep things moving is through succession planting. That means we grow multiple plantings of the same crop in different fields at different times, or choose varieties with different days to maturity. This gives us a much better chance of having a steady supply of our favorite crops, no matter what the season throws at us.
We’d also like finally mention a note about the potatoes! We keep our potatoes dirty mostly for storage reasons, both on the farm and for your home. Washing them would prevent the skins from drying properly, which shortens their shelf life. Leaving them unwashed helps them last much longer. Also it allows us to be able to spend more time picking other crops in peak summer, like all of the tomatoes we will most likely be pulling in this week. Making for what could be our largest share of tomatoes this season. If you are not ready remember tomatoes can be frozen whole or sliced until you can get to them!
While the last two years brought significant droughts, the rain this season has brought its own lessons. But it has also brought a lot of relief by leaving the job of irrigation to the sky. Then we just have to make sure the weeds don’t grow faster than our crops.
Also this week, we are finally waving the flag on our cherry tomato field! U-pick cherry tomatoes have been added to the list. See more below

Blend of smaller cherry and some plum varieties
The even larger flower field (F)-
There are still quite a few blooms, there are even some heads that are starting to produce seeds.
Once they turn from white to a dark brown/black they are fully mature and can be cut, dried on the flower, and once dry the seeds can be broken free to use in your own garden next season.
This is the large field right in front of our smaller parking area inside of the large fence. There is a large gate to enter to the left and a smaller one to the right. Please be mindful to close the gate you use if you are the last in the field.
Sunflowers & zinnias, the large orange flowers are the tithonia and the small globe shaped flowers with the zinnias are gomphrena.
