Farm Updates

We have three weeks after this share!

Serving up another gorgeous cabbage variety, the savoy cabbage. Bringing in a more crinkled leaf that has a milder slightly sweet taste compared to those head cabbages given out in the last two weeks. It lends itself nicely to be used raw in salads but can also still be cooked.

Sweet potatoes are rolling out this week, and we hope to continue getting into the field to complete the remaining rows. Hopefully having them around for these remaining weeks.

Beets are also ready with expectations to have them be around for a couple of weeks, as we get into the three beds planted. The lettuce also seems to be around for a week or so longer, as we shift into another variety and the last few rows. We will keep the other salad greens included as they size up each week, but they may need a week off as growth does slow with less daylight hours.

Our kale, collards, and chard will be needing that break for some regrowth this week, before we go in for another harvest. That way they can come back for these last weeks in a more bountiful way.

Cucumbers we will keep picking as long as they keep producing, but we highly suspect this will be the last week with how chilly the nights are getting.

This week we will still see tomatoes in the share making for 19 weeks of tomato production here at the farm and starting next week, we will start moving in to clear up those remaining green tomatoes on the plant to store in a more temperature-controlled space. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we enjoyed caring for them.

So, for these last few weeks expect to see the return of the cooking greens, salad greens, garlic, sweet potatoes, beets, more cabbages (& possibly another fun variety by the end!), plus carrots, and fennel!

Join us in saying thank you to Joe Brown

Saturday November 1
2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Joe will be with us that afternoon, just as he is most days at CSA pick-ups. We would love to have you join the farm crew as we celebrate and give him gratitude.

Joe moved here with his family as a child and then also started working on around the farm at the age of 15. Over those 60 years he has seen many transitions at the farm, from the tobacco era to the wheat and corn years, through the early livestock days. Into the time of organic produce with the Capital Area Food Bank in the 1990s, to today.

Joe doesn’t say much, but he carries a lifetime of stories, skill, and quiet dedication. It’s a true treat when he is in the mood to share.

We invite you to come together to thank him for the many years of care for the land, and steady presence he has been at the farm.

Food and Refreshments will be provided but we will welcome deserts!
We will aim to have gluten-free and vegetarian & vegan options
