Farm Updates

Peak summer is indeed here, and despite the constant rainfall and high humidity pushing heat indexes past 100 degrees several days this month, the crew is very excited to be at this moment!

With onions and potatoes already making their way into shares over the last couple of weeks, some exciting new crops are coming in this week. Giving us just the boost needed as we still try to make our way through a wet potato field.

Most belonging to the nightshade family, they each will still bring their own unique flavors, colors, and textures to the table. They are perfect for creating fresh and flavorful summer meals.

Let’s go through the peak summer varieties, starting from the top right:

BHN Red – A classic red slicer
BHN Orange – A sweeter slicing tomato
Carbon – An heirloom type similar to Cherokee Purple. The top may stay a bit green. Sweet, rich, and slightly smoky
Gin Fizz – A striped orange heirloom with a sweet flavor and a hint of tanginess
Verona – A plum or Roma-type tomato that is great for salsa
Ace – A classic green bell pepper
Flavorburst – A slightly sweeter green pepper
Cornito Rosso – Red and sweet, delicious raw or cooked
Oranos – Orange and sweet, also great raw or cooked
Shishito – Mild and excellent for frying or baking whole
Poblano – Mild and perfect for adding a touch of heat to salsa or for stuffing with cheese
Buena Mulata – A very hot cayenne-type pepper
Jalapeños – Hot and full of flavor
Tomatillo – The star of salsa verde and a great addition to other salsas, offering a tangy, almost lime-like flavor

As we move into the weeks ahead, finding ways to store extra produce becomes more helpful. One of our favorite methods for tomatoes and peppers is to slice and freeze them for later use.

One of the last summer crops is also starting to size up, okra. Okra tends to be either mysterious, beloved, or known for its texture. While the inside does have a distinct consistency, freshly picked okra is worth trying again, especially cooked with a little cornmeal in a hot pan alongside some shishito’s.

Enjoy!
