Farm Updates

The summer crops have officially taken over our CSA shares! These are the crops that can take a bit of heat as we get into the hottest months of the year.

Coming in a bit more this week are our field tomatoes. We expect next week to see quite a few tomatoes come from that field. The same will go for our bell pepper field. While we could certainly go in and take smaller peppers now, we do not want to keep doing that all summer, so we will wait a touch longer to ensure we stay big all summer long.

While we are going to start the harvest hand-digging with that inch of rain we saw at the start of this week, we are still very excited to get into our potato harvest! Look forward to the first of, hopefully, a great harvest as we start to clear out that field over the next couple of weeks, We hope with the help of our tractor and potato digger, and drier fields, as we go to also keep up with all of our other field tasks alongside harvests.

As we settle into the heart of summer, don’t forget that many vegetables store beautifully for later use. A lot of us on the farm like to slice tomatoes and throw them straight into a freezer bag. When winter rolls around and simmering a big pot of sauce actually sounds appealing, they’re ready to go.

July is a fun month as summer staples all emerge and in abundance by the end as we head into August.

This week also take a look at the newest edition to our u-pick list, try to take a couple of stems to start but by next week everyone should be able to take home an endless amount. Keeping up with cutting the blooms will help us have a longer and more prolific sunflower and zinnia season.
