Farm Updates

.
Well, here we are, hitting a dry spell, and irrigation has quickly risen to the top of our priority list. Rain is not arriving in the way we need as we head into our fall transition. Small crops would truly benefit from some consistent moisture, and our heavy-fruiting summer crops could certainly use the support. We have set things in motion to get water to the fields, starting with those that need it most, like the transplants we settled in just last week.

This week’s harvest still finds us surrounded by the flavors of summer, with a bounty of tomatoes and peppers, even if they could use a bit more rain. It helps that these crops are protected with a layer of straw mulch, which keeps the sun from hitting the soil directly and slows down moisture loss. While conditions are drier now, that mulch has locked in a layer of moisture, keeping the plants just a little happier for a little longer.

We have also been able to keep pressing ahead with our large potato harvest, filling plenty of our vegetable bins with spuds. The onions are still in good supply as well, and we are starting to bring in other varieties, including shallots and yellow onions.

Looking ahead through the rest of August, summer will continue to take the spotlight. Once September arrives, fall crops will begin to overlap in a way that lasts longer than the transition we see in spring. Fall is on its way, and with this week’s weather, it does not feel far off.

For now, we will be making plenty of salsa, and frying up many shishitos. If you haven’t tried it already, shishitos pan fried in a high heat oil and lightly seasoned with salt, is absolutely delicious.
