Farm Updates
Oh how we missed the rain! Conversations about what really required water had started to come up, since our wells can only handle running so much irrigation at a time.
Young Lacinato Kale planted in rows
Between the drip line irrigation we already had and the new lines we laid for the fall crops, we managed to pull through without much of a loss.
Late season tomatoes in high tunnel. One side is trellis with a box weave, the other is trained verticially with more pruning.
It certainly reminded us not to let the timely rain this season make us too comfortable. August is flying by, and just yesterday we noticed the snow geese starting to drift by, one of the many subtle signs that seasons are shifting.
Looking ahead, we will have this week and next before we take our next break for Labor Day week.
September 3 and September 6 there will be NO SHARES
When we get back you may also start to notice the subtle shift happening on the CSA benches as our first set of salad greens was just planted last week and is usually ready in just a few weeks.
Fall is a wonderful time of year. Summer crops are still lingering in abundance and the lush spring crops begin to return along with other fall favorites. Check out how our late season is progressing in the next tomato tunnel and with our transplanted crops that are enjoying all this water.
Growing Onions, Layer by Layer.
from our Farm Crew Lead, Olivia Murphy.
This week just about all of our onion varieties are available in the share, from the beautiful red onions perfect for salads and burgers, to the delicate sweet shallots, to the classic aromatic yellow onions.
These onions began as seeds about eight months ago. In mid-January, we seeded the first of 200 trays in the greenhouse, each planted by hand and carefully tended as they slowly grew into over 50,000 seedlings that looked like tiny blades of grass.
Starting in late March and stretching into August, once the soil warmed, they were painstakingly transplanted into the field. Half an acre of winter cover crop became rows and rows of green onion tops. The heavy spring rains helped tremendously, but weeds came quickly too. Still we took the time to keep up with weeding when we could spare the extra attention.
By mid-May we were harvesting scallions and fresh red specialty onions. By the summer solstice, the onions began to signal the end of their growth as the green tops flopped over. Then the race was on to pull them from the field and move them into dry, ventilated areas to cure. This process allows fresh onions to form their papery skins, turning them into a storable vegetable that can last for several weeks without spoiling or losing flavor.
The onions that do not cure properly are still good to eat, but often have one bad layer that makes them less suitable for storage. Each onion has gone through quite a journey, so be sure to give them all a try, and if using fresh our “culls” or seconds bin will have plenty of extras.
