Farm Updates
Only one week remains after this and we are clearing out the final rows of our 2025 main season.
Four of those rows are a hearty supply of carrots. We will be getting into all of them over the next two weeks and expect to be putting together some large bunches. These roots store for an incredibly long time in a produce bag and are perfect for pulling out as needed for stew, soup, or roasting season.
Alongside these beautiful roots we are still pressing into the beet beds we started earlier. This next round is expected to be a bit smaller as we move into the second pass on all the beds. Fennel is also showing up in abundance way this week. The bulbs store well once you remove the tops, which can be saved to be used as a garnish or tossed into salads. They also roast beautifully with those carrots. Note that fennel eaten raw has a stronger flavor but once cooked it mellows out nicely. If you have not tried it yet this season, we highly recommend it. Here are some great recipe ideas to get you started.
Last week we got another wave of cover crop seeded in the final fields to ensure a good stand of roots before winter settles in and growth begins to slow. The last of our sweet potatoes are also in, and we are happy to report a great yield that will carry us through the rest of the season.
While it feels bittersweet, we are welcoming November even if the evenings arrive a bit too soon, as we wait for the winter solstice. It is easy to see why so many feasts were planned around this time of year. Historically this was the moment when the fields were cleared, the animals were butchered, and pantries were suddenly full after months of labor. Communities would gather to celebrate abundance, and to cook what could not be stored.
Across cultures, from old harvest festivals to solstice gatherings, this has always been the season of feasting, marking an end and the beginning of a more restful season. As we approach these weeks ahead, we hope you can take some time to also rest and enjoy some good food & company.
We will take what weeks we can and will certainly be in a bit more of a thoughtful pace. Even as we get into our next season, starting with our winter CSA. If you haven’t already now is a good time to start securing your winter produce share, starts December 6! Check it out here.
