Farm Updates

It has certainly gotten colder with a touch of frost showing up in some of the low-lying spots on the farm. A hard freeze hasn’t quite settled in yet though, which has been a gift. We don’t have to wait for the greens to thaw before harvesting just yet, and we’re still managing to pick peppers.

Each season we have noticed a subtle shift with warmer early springs and longer, milder falls. It keeps us on our toes when it comes to planning, deciding when to plant, and adapting to changes in weed, disease, and pest pressure. These shifts also bring small rewards and experiments, like our late-season cucumbers that stretched over four weeks this fall alongside the greens.

As we move into the final stretch of the season, expect plenty of fall greens still rolling in with tender lettuces and salad mixes, hearty kales and collards, and one last round of petite bok choi. Carrots are almost ready to join the line up as we give them just another week to size up. We will also be clearing any remaining cabbage heads that have filled out nicely, no matter the variety.

This week we are stripping the last of the green tomatoes from the tunnels and moving them into storage so we can flip that space for the final beds to be planted for our Winter CSA. It is always a satisfying sight to say goodbye to one crop and greet a new round of happy fresh plants. This week we are expecting over an inch of rain through Wednesday and Thursday. So we are preparing another wave of fields for a fresh seeding of cover crop to make sure everything has a strong set of roots to hold the soil in place through winter.

Before those fields get tucked in, we made sure to harvest extra bok choi and peppers for donation this week. They are heading into DC with our partners Redelicious and Food Sovereignty to help support the growing demand from furloughed employees. We also loaded up additional boxes for Shabach, as they have been seeing increased need and are expecting another wave of demand after next week. Each season we donate over 30% of our produce, often from the bumper crops that thrive in their moment, made possible because we plan to harvest a touch extra each week. Thank you all for being part of making that possible through your support of our CSA.

Reminder to join us in saying thank you to Joe Brown this weekend

Saturday November 1
2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Joe will be with us that afternoon, just as he is most days at CSA pick-ups. We would love to have you join the farm crew as we celebrate and give him gratitude.

Joe moved here with his family as a child and then also started working on around the farm at the age of 15. Over those 60 years he has seen many transitions at the farm, from the tobacco era to the wheat and corn years, through the early livestock days. Into the time of organic produce with the Capital Area Food Bank in the 1990s, to today.

Joe doesn’t say much, but he carries a lifetime of stories, skill, and quiet dedication. It’s a true treat when he is in the mood to share.

We invite you to come together to thank him for the many years of care for the land, and steady presence he has been at the farm.

Food and Refreshments will be provided but we will welcome deserts!
We will aim to have gluten-free and vegetarian & vegan options
