This will be our last week before next week’s break. Just a reminder: there are no shares next week September 3, 4, and 6
Taking this break gives us a chance to give the summer crops one last push to see how much longer we can hold on, to give the fall crops some extra attention, and to start prepping fields for cover crops.
Asian pears are in the mix this week. They grow right here on the farm and are a lovely end of summer treat. We have waited to let them ripen as long as possible on the tree, and now that most have shifted from green to a soft yellow, we are harvesting everything we can reach, except those too close to the resident hornet’s nest. These fruits are considered firm ripe, but you can let them continue to soften on the counter if you would like.
This week we will be visiting nearly all of our tomato fields. Our last field tomatoes are just starting to wind down, and at the same time the final set in the high tunnels is beginning to blush. When we return from break, the field tomatoes should be ready to pass the baton to the high tunnel crop, which will carry us a little deeper into fall. So far we have had tomatoes for twelve straight weeks and counting.
Looking at some other summer crops, the peppers are thriving and should be with us until the first frost. That frost seems to come later each season, but by mid October we keep a close watch and harvest before the cold sets in. Eggplant hit its stride early this year. They are producing again now, but will likely remain as a choice item as they take their gradual bow out for the season. Squash, on the other hand, will probably have its last week now, so enjoy them while they are still in the shares.
Potatoes and onions will be with us for quite a while longer. We are still digging rows of potatoes, and there are plenty of onions curing in storage. We had to take a pause when we ran out of space and bins, but now that is sorted we are back while the dry weather holds.
When we return from break, expect to still see plenty of summer in your shares, but also make room for the first signs of fall.
In the coming weeks we will also be gearing up for our Winter CSA, which is on sale now!
