Farm Updates

Welcome back as we head into the last 10 weeks of the Main Season CSA!

Salad greens are back and are looking lush, and many other fall crops are coming in right behind them. Last week’s break was extremely helpful for us to get a lot of field tasks behind us and start closing up summer fields so we can get cover crops seeded.

Cover crops bring all kinds of benefits. They hold the soil in place so it doesn’t wash away, they keep weeds from sprouting in freshly tilled ground, and they bring organic matter back into the soil. When we plant a mix of different types, they also help diversify the activity happening below the surface. Cover crops are one of our biggest tools for improving the health of our fields. Now we are just waiting on some rain.

It has been a bit drier these last weeks of summer, but that worked in our favor for finishing up our potato digging without much trouble. Luckily, our fall greens already had drip lines in place, so it has been nice to just remember to turn the water on and off when needed.

As we head into these last weeks, more and more fall produce will start making its way back into the shares alongside the summer crops still hanging in. Peppers are the summer all-star this year and look ready to meet the frost head-on, and we will be sure to pick them before they lose that battle. We should also keep seeing okra and of course, tomatoes!

This week we’ll harvest the last of the field tomatoes before moving back into the high tunnels, which should carry us through several more weeks of harvest. Fall is a favorite, as the overlap of produce creates a very diverse bounty on our CSA benches. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
