Farm Updates

The share is starting to transition from being mostly green to showing quite a burst of color this week! The wait for cherry tomatoes is finally over, the tomatoes have started to ripen. We will have a red variety (Sakura) and a pink variety (Sunpeach). The red offers a more classic, acidic taste, while the pink comes with a nice sweet flavor.

It’s been a long process getting to this stage. These seeds were started in March, and when they were planted out in April, some nights required extra frost protection. But it’s been well worth it to have tomatoes a whole month earlier than when our field tomatoes will be ready and ripened.

This week, the field tomatoes received their final weeding and have now been mulched to block out weeds and retain moisture. The straw mulch will also break down over time and add organic matter to our fields. Posts are going up now, and tomato twining has begun. Tomatoes really are a labor of love.

Also this week, we’re seeing the high tunnel beans producing well, and the field beans have started, too, making for a prolific harvest this week. There’s nothing like a freshly picked green bean, it’s even better after spending some time in the fridge, creating a cool, crisp treat.

Growing alongside them, because they don’t want to be left alone in the tunnel, are the carrots. Carrots and celery will also be cleared from the high tunnels this week. While the early start there was beneficial, the rising heat means they won’t last much longer.

Celery is part of the “Dirty Dozen” in conventional growing practices due to its thin skin and the heavy spraying it often receives over the long growing season. But this organic celery is nothing of the sort! The stalks are a bit smaller, but they are certainly tasty.

We’ll see the squash slow down this week, but don’t worry, the next batch is already starting to flower and should be ready in a couple of weeks. We hope to time their return just right before the week off for July 4.

Week 7 and Week 8 will happen before then, and we aim to close out late spring with beautiful head cabbages, more kohlrabi, beets, lettuces, and of course, more tomatoes!
